Recent Progress for Our Sudanese Orphans
For the past many years Children of Promise Canada has been the sole financial supporter of the Children of Hope Orphanage in South Sudan. Money sent each month to South Sudan by our organization has been used to provide the basic needs of food, shelter and medicine for a fluctuating number of children. Up until just 2 years ago, the orphanage would be better described as a camp as it has moved 3 times in the span of approximately 5 years as a result of fighting in the region. When fighting in the area escalated again in early 2017, the camp where the children were being cared for was impacted directly and a volunteer who helped at the orphanage was killed. After careful thought and the insight provided by Pastor Simon Galutek who oversees the orphanage, the decision was made to move the children to safer surroundings across the border in Gambela which is situated on the border with Ethiopia. Here, we hoped, it would also be possible to build a more permanent and suitable structure for the ongoing needs of the orphans. Better shelter for sleeping and eating were a key priority given the increasing incidence of malaria during rainy season.
New Buildings at Last
Building an orphanage has been a long term vision for Children of Promise Canada. Two buildings were erected in 2017 at significant expense but it was a very positive step in our history of supporting the children of South Sudan. The buildings support the children in everything they do including sleeping, eating and learning areas as well as a kitchen. A wire fence was built around the orphanage to enhance security.
Enhancing Health
To prevent the spread of malaria which is the leading cause of sickness and death in the region, we have also erected a water tower for bathing and cooking and constructed latrines. We also purchased mosquito netting and mattresses in order that many of the children would no longer have to sleep on the concrete floor.
Education
Only an estimated 27% of adults can read in South Sudan. The many years of conflict, displacement and economic collapse have deprived the children in South Sudan of education. Literacy and education can make peace, development, stability and prosperity all possible but 65% of children in South Sudan have no access to education. The country has the highest proportion of children out of school than any other place in the world. We have been blessed over the past 2 years to be able to organize and receive support and volunteer assistance from local villagers who are helping to care and educate the children. Our sincere hope is that education can make the difference to the children in the long term and increase their chance for a better life.
Next Project: Enhanced Education
We are happy and grateful to our sponsors and donors who made progress possible over these past years which has benefited the children of South Sudan greatly. However, we are mindful of the responsibility going forward to maintain and sustain the orphanage and eager to make further progress on several short term and longer term goals: Our focus for the year 2019 is enhancing the children's education as the government of Ethiopia is quite willing to help the children go to post secondary education if we obtain and maintain accreditation for the education we provide. Thank You and God Bless
